These lines that draw the relief: from Joy Division's cover to your walls
In 1979, a graphic designer named Peter Saville created the cover of an album that would become one of the most reproduced images of the 20th century. No band photo. No flashy logo. Just a succession of white wavy lines on a black background, representing the radio activity of a pulsar discovered in 1967. The album was called Unknown Pleasures. The band, Joy Division.
The image looked like nothing anyone had seen before. Yet it immediately fascinated. Because it made something invisible visible: the rhythm of a neutron star, 2,000 light-years from Earth.
Forty years later, that same visual logic inspires a new form of art: ridgeline plots.
What is a ridgeline plot?
A ridgeline plot is a stacked-curve representation. Each line traces a horizontal cross-section of a landscape at a given altitude. Layered together, these hundreds of slices recreate, through optical illusion, the complete topography of a place.
The result is simultaneously precise and poetic. You immediately recognize a mountain range by its lines surging upward, an island by its contours dropping abruptly into the void, a valley by its soft, regular curves.
It is raw data transformed into emotion.
How Alta creates its illustrations
To bring these illustrations to life, Alta relies on two pillars: real topographic data and a proprietary algorithm.
The data comes from IGN elevation surveys, with a precision of 25 meters per point. Each territory is modeled as a grid of thousands of altitude values. Alta's algorithm reads this grid and extracts successive relief profiles — those horizontal slices that, stacked together, recreate the landscape in lines.
The result is calculated, not drawn by hand. But this calculation produces something the human eye could never compose: absolute fidelity to the terrain, combined with a clean graphic aesthetic. Each illustration is then printed in high resolution on art paper, with inks resistant to light and time.
At Alta, each illustration is the product of two combined disciplines: topographic computation, which extracts real terrain data from a territory, and the algorithm that transforms this data into a graphic composition. Geography composes. The algorithm executes.
Why is this visual language so powerful?
There is something vertiginous about looking at an Alta illustration. The lines seem to vibrate. The relief is sensed before it is rationally understood. It is the same sensation as looking at the Joy Division cover: you perceive something abstract, yet you feel it.
This comes from how our brain processes shapes. Ridgeline plots simultaneously activate two modes of reading: recognition of the place (you identify Mont Blanc, Corsica, Lyon) and purely graphic reading, as if reading a musical score or an oscilloscope trace.
The place becomes universal. The emotion, personal.
A memory, a work of art
This is where Alta goes one step further than mere technique.
Each illustration represents a real place, drawn from authentic topographic data. When you hang an illustration of Mont Blanc on your wall, you are not hanging a generic mountain image. You are hanging 140 lines calculated from IGN data, faithfully tracing every shoulder of the massif, every glacier, every col.
It is at once a decorative object and a document. A work of art and a map. An image and a memory.
Exactly like that 1979 record sleeve, which was initially just a scientific graph — and which became, on a wall, something indefinable.
